Could Spain’s second XI beat England? – originally posted on Soccerlens.com

While watching David Silva and Spain dismantle a dogged and compact Scotland on Wednesday, it struck me: this was hardly Spain’s best outfit and they were dominating. It’s Finally Over

And while we had hoped this headline might apply to the Canucks? franchise 40 year Stanley Cup drought, we are relieved that this season (the longest ever in team history) has finally come to an end.

And while, upon reflection, it will become a season to celebrate, right now it?s impossible to feel anything but disappointment.

The players and coaches will all say the right things about having left it all out there in this strangely epic Stanley Cup Final.  But from this vantage point, we can?t help but think about the lack of anything resembling a sixty minute effort in the three games in Boston from the goaltender on out.

Back in 1994, it was easy to feel that the Canucks got jobbed by some phantom calls in the decisive game 7, not to mention a Nathan Lafayette goal post.  Unlike this time around, the Canucks were wearing their opponent down – with another few clicks on that clock, we might have just tied it.  Indeed,  in 1994, it seemed we deserved more.

This time around, when it came to crunch time you never got the sense that Roberto Luongo was going to make a clutch save or that our elite forwards were ever going to find the back of the net behind the seemingly ever expanding Tim Thomas.  In 2011, it seems the seven game series result flattered the locals.

So what happened?  How did a Cup win that seemed almost certain just over a week ago come so quickly off the rails?  And what does this mean for the future of this team? There are many questions.  And there will be answers.  But not today.  Because it?s over.

When Reality Outcosts Fantasy

I received an email in my inbox with the subject of “Mario Lemieux Fantasy Hockey Camp announced!”, and immediately I began to salivate. I have always been a Mario Lemeiux fan because of his unparalleled skill set, so the chance to skate with “Super Mario” might be a bucket list item for me. And being that Mario Lemieux is involved, you know there will be a ton of NHL players who will lend their skills to the fantasy camp as well. Honestly, who wouldn’t jump at a chance to play with one of the greatest players the NHL has ever seen, even if you don’t like the Penguins or Lemieux himself?

I read on.

“The Mario Lemieux Foundation announced today that NHL great and Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux will hold a fantasy hockey camp on January 4-8, 2012, benefitting the Foundation. ‘I am excited about the prospect of this camp,’ said Lemieux. ‘Not only will this give adults the chance to have an NHL experience, but it will also help raise needed funds for my Foundation’s important cancer projects.’”

If the money is going to benefit a charity, that’s pretty cool too. I’m all for NHL stars putting up millions of dollars of their own monies to help fans and people in the community, and the Mario Lemieux Foundation has always been about helping cancer patients and kids. This is something I can honestly support without thinking twice that someone else is benefiting from the event.

“Participants in the Mario Lemieux Fantasy Hockey Camp will have a truly unique and exclusive team experience of skating with not only Lemieux, but also legends such as Mark Recchi, Mike Eruzione, Gary Roberts, Billy Guerin, Bryan Trottier and Rick Tocchet all serving as team captains. Participants will receive top of the line hockey gear, equipment and NHL-level hockey instruction, take part in a round-robin tournament, and attend two Pittsburgh Penguins home games at CONSOL Energy Center. All proceeds will benefit the Lemieux Foundation.”

So you get free gear, the chance to skate alongside more legends as well as Lemieux, NHL coaching instruction, a tournament amongst the fantasy campers, and you get to see two NHL games at the CONSOL Energy Center? That’s a pile of awesome stuff. Honestly, who wouldn’t want a shot at being a fantasy camper?

But as I read that, there was one little detail that crept into my mind: what’s the catch? How much will this cost me? Tickets to a Penguins game aren’t cheap. Equipment doesn’t come free. And the cost to run the facility and bring in the NHL talent isn’t cheap. So that question hung in the air until I clicked the Mario Lemieux Fantasy Hockey Camp link.

“By submitting the online form, you are registering to participate in the Mario Lemieux Fantasy Hockey Camp. The cost to participate in the Camp is $7,566. Please click the brochure above for full Camp and payment details. Once you submit the registration form, you will be contacted to collect a deposit of $1,500 to reserve your spot.”

And that’s when I realized that I don’t make an NHL salary in order to pay for my attendance. $7566 to attend for four days with a $1500 deposit?!? Camp essentially costs you $1891.50 PER DAY! If you get hurt at camp – something all us fantasy campers never believe will happen – you literally are out $2000 for every day you miss. That’s not something that Joe Casual fan has lying around his house very often.

Look, I’m all for helping the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the causes they support, but $7566 is way too rich for my blood. I’d rather just hit the Mario Lemieux Foundation shop to buy a t-shirt or make a donation directly to them.

Honestly, I have dreamed many nights on my local rink of being on the ice with Mario Lemieux, accepting that seeing-eye cross-ice pass that somehow eludes a dozen defenders, and potting the game-winner upstairs behind the goalie. But that dream will remain a dream because $7566 is a lot of money to play just a few days with one of my hockey heroes. I’m far more content to save my money, attend a bunch of games, and use the remainder wisely.

As for my fantasy, I’ll see Mario Lemieux out on my local rink where that cross-ice pass will find the tape of my stick, and I’ll roof the hero-making goal. There’s no price on that fantasy, and I’m very happy with that.

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

Video: Tiger Woods Gets Attacked By a Hot Dog

Yes, that video is sketchy, and yes, it will probably be pulled by … the end of this sentence … but still, Tiger got attacked by a fan throwing a hot dog at him on Sunday at the Frys.com.

Honestly, doesn’t this make all that criticism on Bubba Watson in France seem legit? This is a guy that is normally secured by thousands of people playing in a lesser-known golf tournament, much like Bubba in France. Tiger playing in the Frys seemed like a perfect opportunity for someone to act like a moron, and look, they did!

If new video comes, we will toss it up.

Have Your Say : This Day in 1981

Another look back at 1981 courtesy of FireStingDoug:

After losing to the Sounders 1-0 on June 17, the Sting travelled to Portland to face the NASL’s version of the Timbers.  Powered by goals from Paul Hahn, Pato Margetic, Arno Steffenhagen, and Dave Huson the 4-2 victory ended the team’s three game losing streak.

The game marked the second to the last time a first division club from Chicago would play in Portland until the Fire took the field there this season.

In case you missed it, Episode 3 of Touchline TV includes an interview with Frank Klopas in which he lists listening to the Chicago Sting play in the 1981 Soccer Bowl on the radio as one of his favorite soccer memories.

How to Run a Football Club: a tale of several Americans

By Saf Hossain, writing from London

The small matter of Liverpool versus Manchester United is, arguably, the biggest fixture in any sport, anywhere in the world. This Saturday afternoon at Anfield was due to be a special occasion regardless, but the most illustrious match in English football will be forced to share the day with a very significant anniversary. October 15th marks one year since Liverpool FC was formally taken over by John W. Henry?s New England Sports Ventures (now the Fenway Sports Group), saved from the cusp of financial oblivion and launched back into the flighty echelons that all clubs aspire to: financial stability. And, if your name is Tom Ollis Hicks, it marks a full year since the ?epic swindle?.

Same old Liverpool fans, always celebrating their small victories ? Happy Istanbul Day! Happy Last-Time-We-Won-A-Trophy Day! Happy Roy-Hodgson-Getting-The-Sack Day! Whatever, you?d be doing cartwheels too if you had witnessed a midfield reduced from Gerrard, Alonso and Mascherano in February 2007 to Gerrard, Joe Cole and er, Christian Poulsen by October 2010.

Among Gillett and Hicks? lengthy list of faux pas from their little jaunt in the English Premier League, perhaps the crucial mistake was to effectively repeat business practices from their other ?franchises? ? the Rangers, Stars and Canadiens, respectively. Trying to apply ideas from local markets where they had demonstrated marginal competency, to a different culture, Hicks and Gillett leveraged every financial transaction against the club ? the intial purchase, the acquisitions of Torres and Mascherano; they even attempted to build a new 70,000-seater stadium using credit (at least Mr Hicks now has a nice drawing of that hypothetical stadium on his mantelpiece in Texas).

With such a gamble you can be certain the two American businessmen expected a sure thing ? that is, Liverpool?s on-pitch success at that particular time, possibly winning the league within a short space of time. But England?s top flight is a league where even Manchester City?s stars could fail to do it on a cold, wet night at Stoke: the unpredictability is a unique selling point. If you wanted a sure thing, Tom and George, you were better off trying to buy Barcelona. But you could imagine these two actually trying that. Would anybody blame them for the financial meltdown that made the stadium project improbable? Probably not, but there?s an important financial lesson to be had: if you have to borrow that much money, you probably shouldn?t own a football club.

While you?re at it, after the curtain is drawn back and your hand is being forced into a sale of the ?asset?, don?t pretend to have miraculously added value to said asset without dipping so much as a little finger into one?s own pockets. To their eternal credit, the Americans? creditors (and the British legal system) saw past the sham and enabled the sale to the owners of the Boston Red Sox.

Were the fans sceptical of yet more Americans at the helm? The club had been built by Shanks and broke by Yanks, after all. But as owners of the Red Sox, the Kopites ultimately took heart from the turnaround at Fenway Park. The bigger question was, would it be possible to balance two massive franchises with parity? In the baseball off-season, two players were signed by the Red Sox to the tune of $300m. Now FSG had to make a statement to the Liverpool faithful, and the £35m transfer of Andy Carroll did briefly break the British transfer record. That was the statement: a debt-free Liverpool was profitable and money was available. It would be put to use, too: Suarez, Henderson, Downing, Adam and Enrique will now play a large part in Liverpool?s future.

The architect of Anfield?s £110 million spending spree, Damien Comolli, they have a director of football schooled in sabremetrics and armed with a methodical approach to squad-building. FSG?s management has been such that the biggest accusation that Liverpool now faces is of overspending. Overspending, the club that?s about to mark a year since they avoided administration. Moreover, the club are able to take advantage of the massive profitability they already enjoy. With a maverick (if outspoken) managing director like Ian Ayre in place, Liverpool?s global popularity can finally be optimised. And in Kenny Dalglish ? FSG?s big ?risk? that has paid off so bountifully ? the Kopites have back an idol that, like some Anfield traditions, bridges generations. Through the winter of discontent under Roy Hodgson, the fans would recall Rafael Benitez? spell in charge as a golden age, but with Dalglish sitting in the dugout the memory of Rafa has been respectfully and appropriately curated into Liverpool?s illustrious history. The team, the brand, and a manager who ?gets? the fans ? have FSG established a new ?holy trinity? at Liverpool, one primed to take advantage of modern football?

It?s perhaps a credit to John Henry and FSG that their grace period with the fans has actually lasted longer than it took for Gillett and Hicks? unfit and unproper business model to be exposed. Then again, after such a period in a club?s history, any alternative was bound to take on something of a messiah complex. On the isle a short ferry ride from the shores of Liverpool originates an ancient proverb: ?Remember,? they say, ?that the darkest hour of all is the hour before day.? But Liverpudlians prefer to take cues from their own hymn sheet: at the end of a storm, there?s a golden sky.

Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien return to Chicago for 1st time

Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien return to Chicago for 1st time

Three weeks after Patrick Kane’s seeing-eye shot found its way past Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton to win the 2010 Stanley Cup for the Chicago Blackhawks, the purging of their roster began. Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien were barely into their summer of celebrating the Cup victory before they were dealt away to the Atlanta Thrashers.

Having your day with the Cup while you’re rostered to a new team must be a bit of an odd feeling, but in Byfuglien’s case, he made sure the Thrashers were part of his day.

But once Ladd and Byfuglien’s days with the Cup were over, that was the end of their celebrating. They weren’t in attendance at the ceremony to receive their Cup rings, nor were they in the house at United Center for the home opener when the championship banner was raised.

On Thursday night, the Winnipeg Jets visit the Blackhawks, and it’ll be the first time the pair will be on United Center ice since Game 5 of the 2010 Final.

With a hat trick against the Vancouver Canucks, a five-game goal scoring streak and three goals and five points in the final two games against the Flyers, “Big Buff” became a Windy City legend during that playoff run.

Ladd was a serviceable member of the Blackhawks in his two full seasons in Chicago, but it was in Atlanta is where he emerged.

After being named the franchise’s youngest captain last November, Ladd posted career numbers in goals (29) and points (59) on the way to a fat 5-year, $22 million extension over the summer. That was just three weeks after he visited Winnipeg for the first time and met with the media. Through the transition of the franchise, Ladd embraced the role of captain in a time when many were wondering about the player attitudes towards living in Winnipeg.

In a different sort of reunion tonight, Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews will be facing off with the team — well, the name of the team — he grew up cheering for.

From the Winnipeg Free Press:

“I think it’s pretty awesome,” he said. “I don’t really know what people are thinking about that jersey and logo in Winnipeg, whether they like it or not, but all those things have fallen into place with them renaming them the Jets. I think they did a great job. It’s not my team, but as an outsider looking in, it’s pretty cool to see that tradition restored.”

Toews said he’s already received messages from friends telling him that they’ll be rooting against him for this one night.

If it were up to us, these Jets/Blackhawks meetings would have more than just two points on the line, especially with the Chicago captain involved. As we see every year with college football rivalries, like when the Paul Bunyan Trophy goes to the winner of Michigan and Michigan State, we’d like to see the naming rights to lovely Lake Jonathan Toews in Manitoba put on the line.

Golfer Wins His Weight in Karl Rove For Hole-In-One

We’ve all heard about hole-in-one stories. Kid banks one off a tree. Guy knocks one in for a million bucks. Shane Bacon never has made one and it really, really pisses him off.

But not a lot of them are stranger than this. Professional golfer and former three-month suspension recipient Elliott Saltman was playing in the Madrid Masters when his tee shot decided to do the eagle shuffle. The ace helped his scorecard, but it might also help his pantry, because Saltman won a prize not a lot of people can associate with. His weight in ham. Seriously.
Saltman, listed at 240 pounds, gets to take home some Spanish ham for his win, which has to be the best prize ever, right? I wonder if he has to check that or if they’re just going to send it to his Scottish home? Judging by my meals in Scotland over the years, this could be the most anticipated packaged the country has ever received.
Have you ever heard of a stranger gift at a golf tournament? If so, let us have it.

Guess Who Is Back?

Yes, I made it back from a great birthday evening yesterday where hockey was talked about ad nauseum, meaning everyone who was there should be prepared for tonight. Why tonight, you ask? Unless you’ve simply lost track of time and haven’t seen a calendar or the date in months, you’d know that hockey is back! The season kicks off tonight with two games on Hockey Night In Canada featuring three Canadian teams, and there’s another tilt going on in Boston where the Bruins welcome the Flyers to watch them raise the Stanley Cup banner to the rafters!

The early game has the Montreal Canadiens visiting the Toronto Maple Leafs in an Original Six matchup to kick the season off right. Both Toronto and Montreal can boast solid, young goaltenders in James Reimer and Carey Price, respectively, and both have some key new additions to their teams.

Personally, I think this may be the season where Toronto challenges for a playoff spot legitimately. In recent years, they were basically mathematically-eliminated after the NHL Entry Draft, but I think they have something special in Reimer. His presence last year between the pipes in the second half of the season saw Toronto climb out of the cellar to a respectable finish, so his continued solid play should be counted on if the Leafs are to make the playoffs. If he falters, it could get ugly in The Big Smoke.

As for Montreal, I believe their biggest concern will be injuries once again this year. This team is smaller than most NHL teams with eight starting forwards standing in at 6’0″ or less, and five defencemen measuring in at 6’0″ or less. Smaller players will feel the grind more than big players will as they tend to be punished quite regularly by bigger players. Andrei Markov is on the shelf once again, so their defence has already taken a hit.

Carey Price will be counted on to turn in another stellar season this year. Peter Budaj is the back-up in Montreal, but he really didn’t wow anyone during camp to push Price. Price was out to prove that he could make people forget about Jaroslav Halak’s playoff run two years ago, and he certainly did with his excellent play. He’ll need another big year to help Montreal stave off some of the challengers for their playoff spot if the Canadiens start occupying hospital rooms again.

The late game features the defending Western Conference Champion Vancouver Canucks welcoming the Sidney Crosby-less Pittsburgh Penguins to the left coast. Will there be a Stanley Cup hangover in Vancouver? It’s the first time that the vast majority of the Canucks have played that late into the year, and the short off-season may hurt them as the Canucks sat their veterans for the majority of the preseason. With many pundits picking Pittsburgh as the Eastern Conference Finalist, do they have the firepower and determination to survive with Crosby and take down the East?

I’m very interested in seeing how Malkin plays. He looked good in the preseason, but that’s not exactly the best competition in the world during those exhibition games. Essentially, this is his team until Crosby returns. Even when Crosby is back, Malkin should continue to push himself to lead this team. He could be the Messier-type player that can compliment Crosby, only with less crying and boasting.

Another Penguin that I want to see do well is James Neal. Neal was a guy I always liked with Dallas, and his trade to the Penguins looked like the Steel Town Team could be an offensive juggernaut with the power forward on their side. His one goal in two dozen games last season gave me cause to worry, so here’s hoping that the preseason games and training camp gave him some time to mesh with his teammates and linemates.

Does Bobby Lou have it in him to help the Canucks to another title shot? With his reported fragile ego, it’s hard to imagine that Roberto Luongo is as successful as he is, yet he was one win away from being a Stanley Cup Champion a few short months ago, and he is the apparent heir to Martin Brodeur’s hold on Team Canada’s starting goaltender position. If Luongo and Cory Schneider can recreate their solid campaigns from last season when they won the William M. Jennings Trophy, the Western Conference should be theirs. But if Luongo is as shaky as he was in latter part of the series against Boston, this could be a long season for the Canucks’ faithful.

Can the twins hold onto the Art Ross for a third season? Vancouver added depth and re-signed some players who could be more instrumental in helping Vancouver get back to the Stanley Cup Final. I like the Chris Higgins signing because he’s gritty and definitely scores more often than Raffi Torres will. Higgins could be that fiesty winger that the Sedins need who will give as much punishment as the twins receive.

Overall, I’ll have all three games going tonight in high-definition, and it feels good to say that hockey is back. I’m kicking it off with Montreal-Toronto as I write this, and the game looks like a good one already!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

Brews And Views Series: Why American Soccer?

We continue our new series on the Free Beer Movement. It’s called “Brews and Views” and we pose a question or topic to various prominent soccer persons and, well, they give us their view on it.

We’ve got loads of get people that have already responded to our call for essay submissions and each week we’ll feature a unique perspective on the current topic/question at hand. Kicking it off (pun intended) we’re asking our respondents the question, “Why American soccer?”.

As inhabitants of the U.S. of A we’ve got loads of soccer viewing options and limited amount of time. We want our panel of essayists to make their case as to why the American version of the world’s game is the one we should all invest in.

Regularly readers know where we stand on this issue. Buy American. It’s ours. Build and shape it so it ranks as one of the premier leagues in the world.

The series will include such diverse voices as former U.S. Men’s National Team player Alexi Lalas, The Shin Guardian, MatchFit USA’s Jason Davis, Church of Soccer, Nutmeg Radio, FutFanatico, MLS Insider, and many, many more.

Interested in submitting your own answer to the question, “Why American soccer?”, then send us an email with your response. Please keep your submission to under 1000 words (that’s like 2.5 pages typed!) and include a picture that you feel goes well with your response. Send it to freebeermovement(at)gmail(dot)com.

By Jason Davis / Match Fit USA and the NEW “Best Soccer Show”

As my response to Dan?s call for answers to the question ?Why American soccer??, I could regale you with emotional arguments draped in the tropes of the American spirit, the idealized inclusive nature of the sport itself, or the undeniable fact that local is always better than distant. It is, by the way. Maybe I should leave at that.

But I won?t. I won?t leave it at local is better than distant, even if our televisions serve as portals to other lands whenever we want them to, or trot out the good, but over-cited reasons for ?Why American soccer?? (which I myself have cited in this very space some time back), which mostly boil down to notions of community and identity. Instead, I?m not going to try to convince you at all. You?re here, reading a post at The Free Beer Movement, which means you?re most likely one of those that has already declared themselves a proponent of American soccer. Why should I preach to the converted?

Your answer to the question might be the same as mine, or it might be something wholly different. The answer is as personal as any of the myriad choices you?ve made in your life (and specifically your sports life). Far be it for me to imply that your particular answer is either A.) trumped by another answer (namely mine) that won?t resonate with you on more than a philosophical level or B.) needs any augmenting to be really real, supremely true, and completely defensible. Your answer is as good as mine, and I don?t even know what yours is. From hipsterism to jingoism and everything in between, it all brings us to the same place.

Instead, and in the spirit of The Free Beer Movement, let?s talk about what it will take for those of you already on the bandwagon to increase the numbers of our flock. Proselytizing? Nope. Nothing so aggressive. Debate, as arguing the merits of the American game with someone wearing Sky Sports brand blinders, thereby (hopefully) turning an existing soccer fan to our side? I think not. That?s a fool?s errand with a low rate of return and the guarantee of unneeded frustration. Nowhere outside of politics and religion are people so married to their beliefs as they are with their sports. The worldview of the American sports fan – soccer fans included – solidifies at some point in adolescence/early adulthood and cannot be moved except of their own volition. If that worldview has no room for soccer or is soccer-friendly but only for non-American versions of the sport, no one is going to change their minds. No one but themselves, that is.

Which is why the FBM is brilliant. It?s a proactive way to expose the unconverted to the sport, and to our version of it, without applying any direct pressure. It doesn?t require a dissertation on the joys of supporting American soccer in America. It doesn?t mandate that the FBMer do anything to the FBMee but provide a tasty beverage in the presence of a live or television soccer match. It doesn?t assume that the person on the receiving end of the free beer is wrong, or that they need to be ?enlightened.? They don?t need anything, but their life could be enriched if they discover – on their own, because that?s the only way the worldview is going to shift enough for it to happen – that American soccer is the S-H-I-Z-N-I-T.

And it will. Believe in the power of the sport to transform people into fans because of all that it is, not because you have a solid rhetorical point. You can tell people that they should love American soccer, but you can put it in front of them – tasty fermented libation in hand – and let it do it?s work.

Okay, okay, I?ll answer the question. I owe that to Dan for including me in a series littered with great soccer people. Why American soccer? Because it?s awesome, that?s why. Categorically, one hundred percent, with zero equivocation, as it is and as it will be, totally and completely, undoubtedly and to my great benefit, awesome. No explanation necessary. I reached that conclusion totally on my own, not because someone told me it was so.

American soccer is awesome. I know this. You know this. Soon enough, the people will, too. Buy them a beer and watch it happen.

After being cut by the Rangers, Sean Avery is a Whale

After being cut by the Rangers, Sean Avery is a Whale

Sean Avery finally decided that staying within driving distance to Manhattan was more important than ice time in Zurich or with Vityaz Chekhov, so the New York Rangers agitator reported to the AHL’s Connecticut Whale on Tuesday after being waived last week.

While the demotion is now “official,” the cap ramifications of his demotion have been known for some time. Avery’s $1.9 million comes off the New York Rangers’ cap; it also comes off of the Dallas Stars‘ cap, as the Stars pay half of Avery’s salary following their buyout two years ago.

This puts the Stars right around the salary cap floor, but according to Cap Geek they’re over the floor “for now.” The cap floor is $48.3 million; Cap Geek has the Stars at $48,817,500 for a 24-man roster. (Would they win both showcases on The Cap Price Is Right with that margin?)

There’s an interesting symmetry here for Avery, the Rangers, the Stars and Hartford; in that Avery’s return to the Rangers started in CT and, perhaps, ends in the place where Wade Redden’s unwanted contracts go to die.

Avery played for the Wolfpack in 2009 while still property of the Dallas Stars, one prolonged audition for the Rangers or any other club that would claim him on reentry waivers. Now back in Hartford with the AHL Whale, Avery’s words back in 2009 read prophetic:

“At this point, this is where I am, this is where my commitment is,” Avery said. “Every single one of us in this room are trying to get back in the N.H.L. or get to the N.H.L. I don’t think there’s any difference. We’re all wearing the same jersey. We’re all trying to get to the same place.”

Glen Sather opened the door for a return last week, although John Tortorella will have the final word it seems. Until then, as our friend Scotty Wazz pointed out: How appropriate that Sean Avery’s next hockey destination is with a team that plays in a shopping mall?

“Wolf Point is a jewel”

Pictured above is our 7th green taken just a few days ago.  2010 has been a challenging year for the blog as well as business.   I’ve been working on leads from around the world, and that has slowed down my ability to post and limited what I can comfortably post. In January I will share some near misses, projects in the works and hopefully tales of one course ready for some improvements.

It is still the rare bird that gets to see Wolf Point… and this is what the last visitor/potential client had to say:

Are Teams Interested In Evgeni Nabokov?

from Katie Strang of the New York Hockey Blog at ESPN New York, The Islanders could be showcasing the 36-year-old netminder in hopes of trading him.

Capuano?s decision was a puzzling one, especially since starter Al Montoya played so well in the team?s first three games. The 26-year-old is 2-1-0 with a 1.35 GAA and .953 save percentage.

Nabokov, one of three goaltenders that made the team out of training camp, received little playing time this preseason and was scratched the first two regular-season games. The former Vezina Trophy finalist makes his first start Saturday after a lengthy layoff; he last played in an NHL game in May 2010.

Asked if any teams have inquired about Nabokov, general manager Garth Snow said through a team spokesman that he ?doesn?t discuss his dealings with other GM?s.?

Scouts from Vancouver, Carolina, San Jose, Phoenix and Columbus are listed on the Islanders seating chart for Saturday?s game.

NHL Northeast Division Power Rankings: October 14

The NHL’s regular season is now a week old and most teams have played at least three games. We have already seen many ups and downs through the first week; from Arron Asham’s antics during a game against the Washington Capitals to Friday’s news of Sidney Crosby being cleared for contact, one might think that all of the commotion has centred around the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Report- Flames Looking To Move Salary

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, • There are more than a couple of contracts Flames GM Jay Feaster would like to burn.

Two league sources told QMI Agency that Feaster is desperately trying to get money off the books.

Not only would Feaster move struggling C Olli Jokinen in a heartbeat, the word around the league is the Flames have been shopping C Matt Stajan, W Niklas Hagman and D David Moss?.

• An NHL executive on the amount of trade talk going on right now: ?There?s actually a lot of teams talking for this time of year. I don?t think you?re going to see anything shake down until the end of the month.?

• Vancouver GM Mike Gillis, an avid fan of this space, has been busy working the phones as well. No, he?s not looking to move G Roberto Luongo, as so many on West Coast wish he was, but he is trying to deal a defenceman. The belief is Gillis would trade D Keith Ballard. Good luck with four years left with a cap hit of $4.2 million a season.

Egyptians don’t care who Bob Bradley is. And that’s progress.

By Eric Beard

In the ever-elusive environment that is African football, Egypt are the winners. They may not be the best, but they?re winners. They may not have the talent to match the Ivory Coast or Ghana, but the 7-time winners of the African Cup of Nations won?t back down against anybody. That?s precisely why if you?re an Egyptian football fan, these past few months (and even years) have been rough as can be. Egypt?s success on the continent has been nothing more than a tease for those hoping to see the best of African football on the world?s stage. Winning back-to-back-to-back African Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008, and 2010, their failure to perform on the biggest stages in international football has left even the most passionate supporters incredulous.

Just two weeks ago, minnows Sierra Leone knocked Egypt out of the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, so the Pharaohs can?t even defend their title. Before that? A failure to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Before that? A failure to advance out of the Group Stage of the 2009 Confederations Cup despite a brilliant 1-0 victory over Italy. Perhaps the Confederations Cup, as well as the objective values of motivation and a winning mentality, is where this story begins.

Needing nothing short of a 3-0 victory and a lot of help from Brazil in their match against Italy, Bob Bradley had his work cut out for him, to say the least. With two detestable performances against Italy and Brazil, the interim US Men?s National Team manager had his job on the line. And somehow, through grit, determination, and individual skill from Charlie Davies, Michael Bradley, and Clint Dempsey, the Americans made Africa?s finest look like Notts County. A nation was left absolutely stunned. Well, actually two nations were stunned.

Egypt exited, but Bob Bradley?s men marched on with a famous win against Spain followed by a final that forced the very best out of Brazil. Bob Bradley had made a lasting impression. Two summers later, US Soccer opted for Jurgen Klinsmann to take American soccer forward and Bob Bradley was left with only his results to his name. Flowing football was never on Bob?s resumé, but to some nations results mean everything.

American or not, the Egyptian FA saw exactly what Bob Bradley could offer. Egyptian football is at its lowest point in years, just as US Soccer was when Bob was appointed in 2006 after crashing out of the World Cup. Egypt?s objectives are clear. Qualify for the next African Cup of Nations in two years and qualify for the damn World Cup. African World Cup qualifying is a whole different beast to what the US were faced with, but make no mistake, it can?t get much worse than a soggy, bumpy pitch in El Salvador, the booming atmosphere in Costa Rica, or a loathsome trip to the Azteca.

Clint Dempsey may be at Fulham. Jozy Altidore may be at AZ Alkmaar. José Torres may be in Pachuca. But Bob Bradley accepting the challenge to coach Egypt, with unimaginable pressure pounding on him before every single match, has expanded the boundaries of American soccer one step further. With such faith coming from the most unlikely of cultural climates, let?s just hope he gets the job done.

Make Age 19 The Minimum For The NHL Entry Draft?

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun, Hockey Canada President Bob Nicholson has submitted a nine-page document to the NHL outlining his belief the league?s entry draft should move from age 18 to 19.

?I wanted to do it because I thought it was the best thing for Hockey Canada and the overall structure,? said Nicholson, who hopes the study will be part of the upcoming CBA discussions.

?For the most part, 18- and 19-year-old players are not close to being ready for the NHL. If the draft goes back a year, it slows down the process at every level. Right now, everyone is on a treadmill to get there.?

Tiger’s Dubai Desert Project, Al Ruwaya, and first NLE – Part 2

I remember the copy on Tiger’s original design web site.  He said he wanted to create amazing golf courses – it has since been edited.  The hole pictured (Golf Digest pictures) above is a par 5 with 6! tees.  I can imagine it is very windy at times and that might be reason for extra tees, but I doubt it.  The 2nd & 5th tees are totally superfluous – who are those for?  Some of the best holes and courses in the world have just 2 sets of tees.  On to playability:  The first shot should stay left of the fairway bunkers – but doesn’t look like it matters – because the 2nd shot will just find the fairway too with little advantage for attacking the green – the angles are too narrow.  The bunker in front of the green may be a nice touch and give the few people in the world who can reach the green in two some concern.  Everyone else will try to hit the fairway twice then the middle of the green.  This hole is not memorable – nice – but certainly not memorable – I wouldn’t call it amazing, unless spending more money on a golf hole than any other on the planet is part of the criteria.  They do get a point for not making lacey edged bunkers that are so in vogue these days – they are clearly Fazio bunkers though – using one of their shapers is my guess.

The previous hole, a par 4, looks like store brand vanilla ice cream. A tee shot between two bunkers to an angled green.  That’s it.

I’ll guess the grass is Paspalum – a warm season grass that does well in high salt environments. The water comes from a desalination plant – this lush vegetation requires a LOT of water. Golf courses do best – look and play – when they blend into the native environment. The course isn’t fighting nature and it looks like it fits.

I have one last picture to describe for tomorrow.

Shotgunning Wednesday’s Top News

All the news that’s fit to drink.

And because you’d rather have a beer than be reading all the time… we’ve taken the day’s top news and given it the Reader’s Digest-treatment so you can get to that post-work pint quicker.

* Timothy Chandler might not be a Nat after-all. At least not a U.S. Nat. Former USMNTer Tony Sannah said today that the Nurnberg defender is re-considering his options and will be meeting with German head coach Joachim Loew soon. Yanks Abroad Brian Sciaretta has spoken to Chandler on multiple occasions and heard that the German-American is committed to the USMNT. We’ll find out in two weeks which side of the fence he’s on.

“This news will certainly come as a disappointment to US fans who have become excited about the prospect of the German-born Chandler becoming a cornerstone of the US team. Chandler has had a breakout 2011 where he has emerged as a rising Bundesliga star.

This latest uncertainty comes after Chandler has made to YA on three separate occasions that he had zero interest in playing for Germany and has only wanted to play for the United States…

…It’ll be about two weeks until the USA and Germany announce their rosters for October. We will likely know Chandler’s future then.”

* Will a New York team be Major League Soccer’s 20th team? No matter if its the Cosmos or not the league’s growth since the opening of the millennium has been phenomenal and the bar is set high for the next expansion team, says Sporting News Brian Straus.

The expansion bar already had been set higher by MLS. Portland, Montreal and the Seattle Sounders had a long tradition of minor league success and support. Philadelphia Union fans showed up en masse to league events before the franchise was even awarded. To enter MLS in the near future, considering its satisfaction with 20, would take an exceptionally special case. There would need to be a wealthy ownership group in place (the expansion fee alone could approach $100 million), a stadium plan (preferably soccer-specific) and a proven level of support.”

* The art of the counter-attack is the focus of Steve Davis’ “Talking Tactics” column on MLSSoccer.com. His evidence is DC United’s Dwayne DeRosario and his movements this past weekend against Chivas USA.

Counterattacking soccer isn?t just tactics; it takes the right kind of players ? actually, let?s make that the right kind of ?attitudes? ? to make the engine hum. United have several like that, none better than Dwayne De Rosario.

The desire to drive forward aggressively is De Rosario?s hard-wired, default position on the field. On Saturday, he consistently collected the ball in midfield with a stubborn single-mindedness: a hell-bent desire to crash immediately forward.

This was clear on the first goal. DeRo?s aggressive mindset lay the foundation for Charlie Davies? eventual piece-of-cake finish. The Canadian star scooped up a fortuitous ball bouncing around midfield and didn?t hesitate for a nanosecond. It?s all about seizing the initiative. That might sound like a no-brainer, but you?d be surprised how many players fail to fully exploit these begging situations. Too many managers value possession, constantly reminding their players that the bad guys can?t score when the good guys have the ball. So they win the ball but frequently forfeit the initiative when ?possession? rather than ?aggression? is prioritized.

* Want to know how much more MLS players make than you? Here’s the full, team-by-team list of their salaries.

* Always wanted that 2007 Columbus Crew Andy Gruenebaum keeper jersey, but never knew how to get your hands on  one? How about a 2008 team signed New England Revolution game ball?

Now those fabulous items and more can be found and purchased at MLSCollectibles.com! Hope you’re a huge fan of anything randomly MLS since 2007 and nothing earlier!

*”Why American Soccer?” Because it became the setting for rival Los Angeles gangs to face each other peacefully? (H/T The Third Kit)

Members of the notorious Vineland Boys gang from Sun Valley took to the field against rival Barrio Van Nuys, one of the oldest gangs in the Valley.Their weapons: A soccer ball and a minister’s prayer for peace.

“It was fun,A Barrio Van Nuys player works his way between two Vineland Boys during a soccer match between members of the two gangs on Aug. 24, 2011 at Delano Park in Van Nuys under the auspices of the city’s Summer Night Lights program.

“It meant unity between two rival gangs of the same race. It was just a little night of relief.”Instead of watching your back, you’re having fun.”

* Former USMNT coach Bob Bradley will be wearing the sweatpants of another nation, Egpyt, as multiple sources report he will be offered the job soon. Sports Illustrated head soccer writer, Grant Wahl, though, says sources close to Bradley have indicated that his appointment is not a done deal.

Egypt have appointed formerUnited States coach Bob Bradley as national team manager, statenews agency MENA said on Wednesday.

Bradley replaces long-standing coach Hassan Shehata who leftin June after holders Egypt struggled in qualifying for the 2012African Nations Cup finals. They have since been eliminated.

Bradley, fired by the U.S. in July, was on an Egyptian FAshortlist that included the experienced Francisco Maturana, whohas managed Peru, Ecuador and his native Colombia, and ZoranFilipovic, the former Yugoslav striker and Montenegro coach.

The American will be given the task of getting Egypt to theWorld Cup finals for the first time since 1990.

Video: Adam McQuaid really needs to stop doing this to himself

Against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night, Adam McQuaid did as Adam McQuaid does: He tried to make an aggressive play in the Boston Bruins‘ defensive zone ? and ended up paying the price on the end boards.

Sometimes, the worst headshots are the accidentally self-inflicted ones:

From NESN:

McQuaid didn’t have much to celebrate on his 25th birthday as he lost his balance while the Bruins were killing a penalty midway through the third. He struck his head along the base of the boards and appeared dazed as he struggled to his feet and gamely tried to play on until the next whistle.

McQuaid was guided to the bench by Zdeno Chara and stayed on the bench briefly before the medical staff took him to the locker room.

He did not return to the game and coach Claude Julien did not have an update on his condition when he spoke to the media following the contest.

It’s not the same situation — the Bruins’ defenseman clearly lost an edge Wednesday night — but this McQuaid incident immediately brought back visions of his whiffed check against Mike Richards, then of the Philadelphia Flyers, in the Eastern Conference semifinals:

We believe it was John McClane who said it best in “Die Hard 2″: “How can the same [poop] happen to the same guy twice?!”

McQuaid missed the last two games of the Flyers series with a neck injury; we’ll update here when the aftermath of this crash is revealed. But a quick note to the attending physicians: If he starts blabbering about being in a Dragon Boat with Kate Middleton, it’s not a concussion-fueled delusion.

Game Watch ? Colorado Comes A Callin?

3:13 pm Pacific – Pre-game preparation, which means I try to think of any players on the Avalanche without having to look it up. So far I’ve come up with Matt Duchene, the great young defenceman. If you would have asked me a few years ago I would’ve been able to say Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, [...]

TBC: Old-Timey Hockey Tales

I’m very happy to help the promotion of this title. HBIC friend and colleague Rob Ullman is probably best known for his work over on his site, Atom-Bomb Bikini, but Rob also publishes some of his work in various forms. One such form is his latest comic book called Old-Timey Hockey Tales, written with Jeffrey Brown and published by Wide Awake Press. Inside the covers, there are ten illustrated stories of some of the most interesting events in NHL history. Rob and Jeff have done a marvelous job in bringing these stories to life through their comics, and the stories become much more vivid with the pictures accompanying them.

From the Atom-Bomb Bikini site, “Robert Ullman pays the bills as a freelance illustrator for a plethora of publications, such as Virginia Living, The Stanger and The Washington City Paper. He creates comics in his spare time (of which there never seems to be enough), including Atom-Bomb Bikini, Grand Gestures, Old-Timey Hockey Tales and the upcoming Sellout, which will see print one of these days.” Mr. Ullman is a longtime friend of HBIC, and HBIC is proud to regularly feature his work when he has a new hockey-related idea. Rob’s a Pittsburgh Penguins fan, and he’s picking the Penguins over the San Jose Sharks in this year’s Stanley Cup Final (for the fifth year in a row).

Old-Timey Hockey Tales has ten individual tales of hockey history spread over the 32 pages of this comic book. Some show lots of detail while bringing the story to life while others seem to be a little more rough. Regardless of the artwork, you get ten fabulous stories with some excellent visual delights to help the stories come to life!

There’s a story about the famous Richard Riot in Montreal after NHL President Clarence Campbell suspended the high-scoring winger for the remainder of the season and the playoffs for striking referee Cliff Thomson. There an excellent tale on Michel Briere, a Penguins player few know about, but who has his number retired by the Penguins. And there’s a great story on the invisible names worn by the Leafs in 1978. You might remember a story about that right here on HBIC. Well, it was Rob Ullman who prompted me to do the research, and he turned it into a spectacular comic strip!

Honestly, Old-Timey Hockey Tales is a fun way to read up on some of the NHL’s history. Mr. Ullman and Mr. Brown go deep into the archives of the NHL and unearth some gems that they transform into fun, education comic strips. Adding this to your night table or bookshelf won’t set you back a pile of dough – Old-Timey Hockey Tales is a mere $6!

I’m very happy to help Mr. Ullman promote some of his excellent work, and I bought myself a copy along with a poster of the Richard Riot comic. The work put into these Old-Timey Hockey Tales is excellent, and they the stories, albeit briefly, of some of the most memorable moments in NHL history. Because of the work done by Mr. Ullman and Mr. Brown in both the stories and the strips, I’m proud to give Old-Timey Hockey Tales the Teebz’s Book Club Seal of Approval. Get on over to Rob’s site and pick yourself up a copy!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

Video: Ex-enforcers get ?Coach?s Corner? apology from Don Cherry

Video: Ex-enforcers get ?Coach?s Corner? apology from Don Cherry

The moment the words “hypocrite”, “pukes” and “turncoats” left the lips of Don Cherry during the opening “Coach’s Corner” of the 2011-12 NHL season on Oct. 6, a firestorm erupted.

Cherry, as you’ll recall, called former tough guys Stu Grimson, Chris Nilan and Jim Thomson ”turncoats” from what Grapes believed at the time were comments by the trio saying that fighting should be out of the game and that the deaths of Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak this summer were linked to alcohol and drugs.

The following morning the trio made the radio and television circuit defending themselves and citing Cherry’s uninformed rant about them. Nilan called for a public apology, while Grimson — who practices law in Tennessee — released a statement days later threatening “further recourse” against Cherry, a sign that a lawsuit was potentially in the works. CBC’s executive vice president of English services, Kirstine Stewart, issued a statement distancing the network from Cherry’s comments.

On Saturday night during “Coach’s Corner”, Cherry finally gave in and delivered a public apology to Grimson, Nilan and Thomson:

“I gotta admit, I was wrong on a lot of things.”

Did you ever think you’d hear Cherry utter that sentence?

Cherry, as stubborn an Irishman as they come, didn’t back down in the immediate aftermath of the controversy only saying that he regretted using the word “pukes” in reference to the three.

Of course, in the week and a half since he uttered those comments, the combination of Grimson threatening “further recourse” and someone whispering in Grapes’ ears that he was, in fact, wrong in what he said helped him swallow his pride and admit his fault.

UPDATE: Via Twitter, Nilan and Thomson responded with gratitude for Cherry’s apology:
